Connecting Communities

Some four years after InSciTe’s foundation, we are proud to now work with over 35 partners and a large number of talented researchers in our community. Our expertise, our people and our facilities enable us to accelerate your innovations, and we are seeing the first concrete results of our joint efforts. We aim to offer solutions for some of the challenges that our society is facing. On the one hand, we develop new and radical medical therapies for patient benefit and for affordable health care and, on the other hand, we develop new and sustainable production methods for chemicals using renewable resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. In short, we hope to make a positive contribution to our society.

The InSciTe Lignin RICHES project and the InSciTe Horizontal project are part of the SCeLiO-4B program (Sugars, Celluloses and Lignin Scaling up towards BioBased Building Blocks). *

Together with the development and validation of the Biomedical Accelerator Matrix (BEAM-NL) and with the development of a full value chain at pilot scale for lignin-based materials and chemicals (‘Meer doen met lignine’), these projects are co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Provinces of Limburg and Brabant in the context of the Operational Program South Netherlands (OPZuid).

The InSciTe Lignin RICHES project is also part of the BIO-HArT collaboration, established by a contribution of the European Interreg V Flanders-The Netherlands program that stimulates innovation, sustainable energy, a healthy environment and the labor market by means of cross-border projects.

Finally, InSciTe is acting as a partner organization (and representative of the non-profit public organizations) within the EIPIN-IS multidisciplinary research program examining the role of intellectual property (IP) in an innovative environment.

*Sugar, cellulose, and lignin: scaling up to ‘SCeLiO-4B’ biobased building blocks

This project created a cross-regional, open innovation environment by setting up and connecting the biobased living labs at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus (BCC) in Geleen and the Green Chemistry Campus (GCC) in Bergen op Zoom. In the long term, this OPZuid collaboration will offer many entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop and transition from laboratory to pilot-plant scale. Stimulus Programme Management implements these kind of European, national and regional subsidy programmes in the Southern Netherlands and Flanders.

Program manager Pieter Liebregts of Stimulus praises the economic impact of the SCeLiO-4B project:

‘This project is a good example of what we’re aiming to achieve with the OPZuid grant programme. It strengthens the region’s innovation structure by getting research institutes, start-ups, SMEs, and large companies working and innovating in unison. Together, they’re taking major steps forward. That’s not to mention the benefit to the region’s human capital: the knowledge gained here is being used in training and educational programmes at a range of levels. This is a huge boost to companies and employment in Limburg and Brabant.’

Partners have achieved breakthroughs in chemistry, chemical catalysis, and process technology, producing biobased building blocks from renewable raw materials. These technologies and products have been extensively tested, with many of the processes scaled up to pilot-plant level – some on the partners’ premises and some at the BCC and the GCC. The living labs at the BCC and the GCC are fully equipped, and having attracted many tenants and users, they’re proving to be extremely popular. All in all, the SCeLiO-4B project has been a great success. As many as 39 companies have received support from the project, mostly from the BCC or GCC. One major result of the SCeLiO-4B project is the creation of the company Vertoro, a spin-off of InSciTe and TU/e which is based at the BCC. Vertoro focuses on converting lignin, wood, and plant residues into Crude Lignin Oil (CLO), which can be applied in resins, biophenol, fuels, polyurethanes, and other materials. Since the start of the project, a large quantity of CLO has been produced on a pilot-plant scale at the BCC and delivered to customers.


To the market

In 2020 we will continue our efforts to further develop InSciTe. We will be expanding our biobased pilot plant by installing new processing equipment. For our biomedical projects and our customers, we have developed a new biomedical facility with new and improved capabilities at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. We remain committed to the technical validation, and commercialization of the outcome of the projects of our consortia. In parallel we are developing and implementing our strategy for 2021 and beyond. We will continue to form new collaborations and partnerships to accelerate the development of new products and services.
